The Loretto Community

We are the Congregation of the Sisters of Loretto and Loretto Co-members. We work for justice and act for peace because the Gospel urges us.

Living our mission

Our priority concerns are immigration justice, care for Earth and the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Loretto Community members work for justice and act for peace in the United States, at the United Nations and around the world, including in education, healthcare, spiritual accompaniment, the empowerment of women, environmental stewardship, anti-discrimination, land acknowledgement and advocacy.

Many members of the Loretto Community in El Paso respond to the needs of the area. Here are what a few members are involved in!

Buffy Boesen SL is a Court Appointed Special Advocate for a youth in foster care. She also serves on the Social Justice Committee in her parish. Jackie Diego Medina CoL offers clinical social work services to people with mental health problems in the federal sector. Helen Santamaria SL offers a spiritual presence to persons experiencing homelessness; Loretto Academy students, parents, faculty and staff; persons receiving spiritual direction and those attending silent Ignatian retreats; and to local civic and religious organizations.

At Loretto Academy, Liz Deines SL is the campus minister and focuses on promoting Laudato Si’ across the elementary, middle and high schools. Terry Franco CoL teaches English and theology and helps students meet their goals in a Credit Recovery Program.

Pilar Gonzalez CoL works part time with an education program that fosters bilingualism among parents and teachers.

Pat Delgado CoL pickets with a group weekly outside the federal courthouse to protest war, unjust migrant practices and capital punishment.The eve of every Texas execution, she prepares a service to pray for the person to be executed, their family, the victim and their family and for the end to capital punishment in Texas. She also organizes a citywide gathering and prepares World Day Against the Death Penalty reflections.

Mary Margaret Murphy SL is a consultant for Villa Maria, a transitional shelter for women who are homeless. She helps with staff training, proposal writing, encouragement and support.
