Holy Week is a week of looking backward and forward. We look back at all that has taken place in Jesus’ life preceding His death. The Gospel of Mark tells us Jesus’ main message in Chapter 1:15: “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe in the Gospel.” Even though He healed others; He did not heal Himself, He willingly let Himself be handed over to the cross.
Holy Week is also a week of looking forward. It is a week to gather around the table of the Last Supper. To open ourselves to be fed with the bread of life, just as Jesus fed the disciples. He gives us His body and blood – to be shared, and as we do we affirm our faith and we celebrate not only Jesus’ Last Supper, His death on the Cross but also His glorious Resurrection. Jesus rises from the tomb, His Exodus from death is but an announcement that one day we will all rise. Our faith is a Resurrection faith, it is an expression of hope.
We have every reason to sing Alleluia on Easter morning: Christ is Risen!
