Listen up: Lent, St. Patrick, St. Joseph & Loretto Magazine!

Posted on March 17, 2025, by Loretto Community

The second week of Lent the Church scribes give us the message that Jesus wants us to remember for the whole season of Lent and perhaps our whole life. Here is God speaking to us: “This is my beloved son, listen to him.” The key word there is, of course, listen.

The word “listen” comes to us from the familiar story of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mt. Tabor. Many writers refer to this event as Jesus’ revelation to the disciples of his forthcoming glory in the Resurrection. Another way to think of it has the disciples experiencing a new vision: a new glimpse of God in the whole cosmos. The disciples got new eyes and new ears!

What of our new eyes and ears? Lent is a good time to look around and ask, “What is God saying to us in our time? How do we change to pursue a better tomorrow for so many who are hungry; sick; suffering from severe poverty; abandoned, especially the children in Gaza and all the Middle East; and experiencing injustice in many corners of the world?

The need for a transfiguration of our time demands a new world view, one which listens and sees where God leads: a global community which cares for all people, provides children with safety, less harm to the planet, an end to all wars and the decline of any governmental domination towards its citizens.

We can do this together. It is Lent. It is our time to wake up and be transformed. Listen.

This week on our Facebook page, we will feature content from the newest issue of Loretto Magazine. Enjoy! And Erin Go Braugh and Happy St. Joseph’s Day, too!
