Last spring Mary Swain received a call for help from an organizer from Cedar Grove in Bullitt County, Ky., north of Nelson and adjoining Jefferson County. The utility company LG&E wants to run a natural gas line through the county, which includes Bernheim Forest. LG&E is using pressure tactics on landowners and has not met environmental study regulations. The organizer asked Mary to send letters to a list of ten organizations.
Mary wrote a letter, which was signed by 70 Community members, scanned it and emailed it to all the listed groups, including government agencies, law firms, corporations and private companies.
She received one response from the Biological Diversity Organization:
“Dearest Mary,
Thank you so much for taking the time to organize the petition about LG&E’s pipeline and send it to me. When I saw all those signatures my eyes filled with tears and my heart filled with motivation. You inspired me to keep speaking up for our beautiful world. It meant a lot.
Warm regards,
Tierra”
In the same way Mary forwards homilies, she would be willing to forward some of the letters she writes to those of us who would send on copies ourselves to appropriate agencies.
